A beautiful collaboration was born this year with the NW Art Center in Duvall. The center reached out to our art club in the fall asking if we would be interested in having a student art show in the spring. The show would be based on a single theme and the students would be in charge of marketing, curating and organizing the event. It was a huge success!
Each year in Hands on Design I assign a "Project Runway" style fashion challenge project. I provide groups of students with unconventional materials and they must create a wearable piece of art. This semester in Hands on Design I assigned FOOD as the required material. The outcome was deliciously sweet!
This week in AP Art we were lucky to have a guest artist. Local watercolor artist and teacher Susan Jenkins demonstrated her process and then walked the class through their own watercolor project.
AP Studio Art and Advanced Drawing and Painting practiced their skills of drawing from life with this 1970's Schwinn bicycle.
Students had their choice of dry media for the task and their choice of background.

Joe Lee is a local chalk artist, seen here demonstrating his technique. He challenged students to draw their favorite character or create their own character on a 16x20 chalkboard.

During first quarter, my Drawing and Painting class worked hard on contour line drawing. My T.A., Olivia Seminara, assembled this large piece made up of their contour arm drawings and had drawings. .
This fall the Art Club created miniature pieces of art that they placed around school for people to take at random.
The ASB hosted a school wide holiday door decorating contest. Lego of my Toys was inspired by my 5 year old sons who are way into Legos. My advisory worked really hard on this design.
This past Saturday I took an all day drawing class at The School for Arts and Sciences on Capitol Hill in Seattle. It was taught by Barbara Fugate, a Seattle gesture drawing artist. She was amazing and the experience was so awesome! I will definitely be using the techniques I practiced in my classes. Get ready for large drawings on newsprint with lots of movement!

All art students created a leaf on the first day of school. Each leaf was added to our classroom tree collage. Throughout the day my bare tree trunk transformed into a bright and colorful piece of collaborative art.
The K-12 District Art Show was a great success. During the event our art club hosted an Artathon until midnight. They created a collaborative portrait of Frida Kahlo among other personal pieces.

SEATTLE FIELD TRIP SPRING 2015
As a reward for all of their hard work we decided to take out annual Seattle field trip in May after AP Portfolios were submitted. We spent time at the Olympic Sculpture Park sketching and taking in the sights. We then walked through the city to the Seattle Art Museum where students spent several hours taking in the beautiful art.

So, today was "Dress Like Your Favorite Teacher Day" and Aubrey Ravsten decided to try for a Desch look alike! She did pretty well with her dark sweatshirt, skinny jeans, black boots AND she even carried around a green smoothie. Yup, I am a health nut and can often be seen drinking what looks like inedible sludge. Thanks Aubrey, you made my day!
Connor's entry "The Hunt" has been selected as a Regional Winner in the Puget Sound Educational Service District's Annual Art Show. His piece will be advancing to the 42nd Annual State High School Art Show in Olympia. Good Luck Connor!
Local artist, Joe Lee Davidson, visited my last period AP Studio Art and Advanced Drawing/Painting class last week. He shared his own art and expertise about the meduim of chalk. Students then worked for two days on Halloween themed chalk drawings which were on display at the final Carnation Farmers Market on Oct. 28th.

Since chalkboard art is temporary, I took photos of the work and made color copies at EF Printing. They are currently hanging in the hall near the art rooms.
On the first day of school all art students collaborated on a graffiti style drawing project. It was a fun way to start the school year and a great way to add some color to our hallway!
Check out our new hallway mural. This is a collection of figural paintings from spring semester. They were created by the AP Studio Art and Advanced Drawing & Painting classes. Students chose a photo of a CHS student from old yearbooks and yearbook stock photography. They then interpreted the photo in the style of a famous artist.
This past spring seven AP Studio Art students embarked on the rigorous task of completing the AP Art exam. All seven students passed the exam!
